The Story
This 1992 Fuji Discovery was my first full restoration using all the original parts. My friend Jay wanted to pass this bike, which he’d owned since new, to his son Timmy. I got to bust out the ultrasonic parts cleaner, but even then, it required disassembling and deeply hand-cleaning parts like the shifters and derailleurs.
I was able to get the shifters working again after deep cleaning the ratcheting mechanisms, removing rust from all the moving parts, and replacing and re-packing the bearings in the hubs, headset, and bottom bracket. I replaced the tubes and tires with some new knobbies and replaced the bulky “comfort” saddle with a lightweight yet era-appropriate one. I replaced the hardened brake shoes with fresh pads and tuned everything up.
Lastly, I restored an ancient RockShox Quadra 21R fork to replace the rigid fork, which at a 1” steer tube diameter is hard to come by these days, but was worth it as it dramatically improved the riding feel of the bike. This required digging out the crumbling yet somehow liquefied old elastomers and replacing them with fresh ones.
The old Quadras only came in yellow which is fortunate in that it is the accent color for this Discovery.
This bike is a fully rideable and fun slice of history.
